Fascinating, even if you're not a film buff
I watch a fair amount of movies, but I would hardly call myself a "film buff". I was a little skeptical of the book, but I bought it anyway on Nick Hornby's recommendation in Polysyllabic Spree. It turns out that this is a pretty fascinating subject. I wouldn't have thought I'd be very interested in the making of Batman or Titanic, but I couldn't put the book down.Shone has a very enganging writing style, and the book is as much a history of people as much as of movies. He starts with the first big blockbusters of 25 years ago -- Jaws, Star Wars, ET, Alien -- and recreates the excitement we felt when we first saw them. The latter half of the book examines Hollywood's hubristic blockbusters -- Gozilla, Last Action Hero -- and how we all went to see them anyway. I always thought of the big summer action films as something Hollywood slapped together to make a buck, but sometimes they represent somebody's dreams (Back to the Future). Then again, sometimes they really are...

Product Description

The unmistakable opening bars of John Williams' score for JAWS heralded not just the arrival of a man-eating shark, but the appearance of a new type of movie. Fast, visceral, and devouring all in its path, the summer blockbuster had arrived. But having brought audiences back to theatres in record numbers, the beast then took on a life of its own, and by the 1990s had run completely out of control. Are the studios even in the movie business any more? Or are they just in the blockbuster business? Written with a passion of a true movie fan, and the wit of one of our best critics, Tom Shone's book is the first to try to make sense of this global phenomenon. He has interviewed all the key participants -- from directors like Spielberg and Lucas to the executives who greenlight these behemoths, down to the effects boffins who detonated the Death Star and blew up the White House -- and produced what is easily the most incisive and entertaining book about film since Peter Biskind's EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS. Interesting and amusing analysis of the "Jaws & Jedi" generation of film-making
Some reviewers here accuse Shone of being simplistic in his rebuff of Peter Biskind's Easy Riders etc but in fact it's simplistic to view the book in this way. I think Shone just wishes to continue the story beyond the point at which Biskind chose to end his; the Biskind-bashing very evident in the early chapters comes off the back of this but one of Shone's main points is that Jaws and Star Wars should/can be seen as artistically rich and groundbreaking in their own right, just in a different vein to the films of Biskind's heroes. The view glibly asserted by an earlier reviewer here, that Spileberg and his ilk are "dull" and therefore unsatisfying as subject matter, is exactly the somewhat sniffy received opinion that Shone attacks, and it's a pleasure to read, as is the long-overdue puncturing of some sacred icons. He isn't simply defending anything that gets called a blockbuster - he calls into question our use of that term when it's often used to describe over-hyped...

A great treat for SWEET fans!
I've been a true fan of the Sweet since I saw them on TOTP as a very small American girl living in Scotland in the early 70s. It's hard to find anything in print about the Sweet, and this book was a great read, having alot of fun facts, hard truths, unpleasant moments, and just pure joy for those of us who have always loved this band and miss Brian and Mick!Mick is one of my all-time fave drummers, and influence me as a drummer to start my own fall-female rock band in the early 90s. I own everything the Sweet ever did and anything that ever comes out on this overlooked band is something I will always purchase and always recommend, as it's so few and far between. This book was, IMHO, a great read about a great band!

Great book for Sweet fans!
This is a nice book for fans of The Sweet band. Perhaps one of the most underrated and influential British rock bands of the 1970's. This book is packed with details, Quotes, interviews and photo's of the band memebers Brian Connolly, Mick Tucker, Andy Scott, and Steve Priest . It was written with the approval of Steve Priest. I don't think it is the definitive book on the band but it is well researched and loaded with alot of imformation, recordings, tours, management problems, etc. I think most Sweet fans would be happy to have it. I do wish it went into more of their personal lives , wives, children, girlfriends, especially Brian Connolly the handsome lead singer who passed away tragically at age 51. Brian was the heart and soul of Sweet. I feel there is a much deeper story to be told. The pictures in the book are great but some were a bit grainy. Still it is one of the only books about Sweet. I'm happy to have it. I really love the Steve Priest book "Are You Ready Steve?", but...

Excellent!
This was a great read from start to finish. The detail was right on the money and pulled back a few layers from the mysterious 1974-77 period that were not known to many. I also finally was able to read and understand the sequence of events pertaining to Brians departure and the 1979-82 period. Really good stuff. A real "fans fan" book.

A journey back to the spangled age of Glam Rock, when men were men and women were often men in disguise, in the company of the most outrageous band of all

This is the first biography to explore the beautiful dichotomy of the Sweet, still one of the best-loved bands of their age. Between 1971 and 1975, the Sweet were invincible, fighting every step of the way against their reputation as a pop group with a simultaneous string of records that are today recognized as hard rock classics. Such performers as Bowie, Queen, and Slade may have hogged the headlines, but the Sweet were the pioneers. Powered by exclusive interviews with all four original members of the band, and written with the full cooperation of bassist Steve Priest, this is the story of the Sweet as they lived it, a vibrant helter skelter of delectable drama and dynamic detail. The book also includes a full worldwide discography including albums, singles, and audio-visual material.

Midwest Book Review, March 2007
Have you ever been deep in the writing of a novel - only to discover that you've lost the thread, that the plot doesn't square up the way you thought? Do you find yourself swimming in deep water - or perhaps completely over your head - when you think about plot? Even worse, have your initial readers told you that your plot doesn't make sense? If so, this is the book for you.Whether you plan your plots in advance or improvise as you go along, Martha Alderson's two major tools, the Scene Tracker and the Plot Planner, will improve your overall writing product. By the time you finish this book, you'll have learned seven major ways to improve your novel, and you'll have a much better grasp of the plot and structure of any book you choose to create. With the use of Scene Tracker, Alderson artfully explains how to break down your work to identify scenes, then determine when to use scene and/or narrative and decide how to keep track of flashbacks, the timeline,...

A best-selling author who loves this book!
Some writers make plot seem effortless. It's not. This book gives you a step by step plan (which is what I need when I get stuck)and great examples. It shows you how to map out the three crucial pieces of your puzzle and coaches you along for the rest of the ride.I like the templates and it's very "How To" frankness. This book obviously understands that one of the main reasons we get stuck is that we get stressed out about getting stuck!I'm working now on my second novel and the pressure's on! This book helped me see that even without all the answers I can still do the work. By doing the assignments in the book, the answers begin to fall into place.Jennifer SolowAuthor of THE BOOSTER

A Great Tool to Have!
This is my first time giving a review for a book. I was compelled to do so because my expectations for the book were high based on past ratings. Was the book and the author's tools for plotting helpful? Yes and No. Let me explain my take on it. The scene tracker, although simplistic, listed some areas that one should chart in order to be aware of gaps that one may have in certain scenes. I especially liked the concept of tracking the emotional change and how important it is to have "change" and "conflict" in each scene or it needs to be reevaluated or discarded. I give the book 2 stars just for learning that aspect/tool in scene tracker. There is more to scene tracker, however, I will not give it away. You'll have to buy the book. The scene tracker makes the purchase of the book worth it.On Plot Planner, the only thing I found helpful was connecting individual scenes together above & below the plot planner to make a line if only each consecutive scene can be connected thru...
